SERDANG: Selangor has embarked on a campaign to create more awareness about One-Stop Crisis Centres (OSCC) for victims of domestic violence, rape or sexual abuse in hospitals. Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei said the state is doing this under its Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) agenda (Economy for Citizenry),launched by Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim last year.

Gan yesterday led a delegation of hospital and welfare offi cers, as well as the media, to see how the state government can help improve the facilities and services at such centres. Serdang Hospital is one of six hospitals in Selangor that has an OSCC. The others are Ampang Hospital, Selayang Hospital, Sungai Buloh Hospital, Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang and Kajang Hospital.

OSCC was formed in 1997 by the Health Ministry so that victims of domestic violence, rape or sexual abuse can be fast-tracked for treatment. Gan said as OSCCs were little known to the public, the state government has since May planned and conducted some workshops in several constituencies to increase public awareness on OSCC.

department chief Dr Rosidah Ibrahim said since the OSCC in Serdang was formed in 2006, the number of domestic violence, rape and child abuse cases treated at the hospital year on year, has increased. “In 2006, we received 30 cases. Until May this year, we received about 70 cases out of which six cases involved child abuse.” “The concept is literally a one-stop centre for all the procedures so victims do not need to go to many places to get help,” said campaign awareness head Endok Sempo M. Tahir.
